Mission
Statement
"THE
NEVIS HISTORICAL AND CONSERVATION SOCIETY EXISTS TO PROMOTE
AND FACILITATE THE EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF THE HISTORICAL,
CULTURAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES OF THE ISLAND OF NEVIS FOR
THE BENEFIT OF ALL ITS PEOPLE."
|
The foundations of sustainable development lie in the hands of competent research, the provision of a scientific literature specific to Nevis, and most importantly, collaborative opportunities for Nevisians.

(NFSC) was established in 1995 to attract those
individuals and institutions interested in engaging in meaningful
environmental and cultural investigation. By recruiting and
facilitating research specific to Nevis, the NFSC acquires
the body of knowledge necessary to promote sustainable growth
on the island.
Like
many other small island states, Nevis is undergoing a period
of rapid physical and social change.
The effects of a tourism-driven economy, changing lifestyles
and the increasing infrastructure demands
of the island community have placed unprecedented pressure
on the environmental resources of the island. The need for
specialized scientific knowledge is more apparent than ever.

Areas
of focus
The NFSC exists to promote research of tropical
ecosystems. Areas of study are unlimited but emphasis will
be placed on environmental studies, biodiversity, historical
analysis, archaeology, architecture, marine and coastal zone
management, preservation and conservation.

Biodiversity
Project
Biodiversity Website is under Development
The
NHCS is part of a government initiative which includes the private
sector and non-governmental organizations, the aim of the programme
is "To sustainably use and conserve the diverse biological
resources of the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis for balanced
socio-economic development, scientific, educational, cultural,
recreational, and aesthetic value for all humankind."
- Improve
understanding of island species - document distribution, abundance
and conservation status.
- Implement
a system to monitor biodiversity and influence policy and decision-making.
- Increase
public awareness regarding biodiversity.
- Identify
species of cultural and economic significance and promote sustainable
use

Upper
Round Road Trail
In
1999, the NHCS proudly received an Islands' magazine Eco-Tourism
award for the Upper Round Road Trail. The Upper Round Road Trail
(URRT) is a multi-user heritage and recreational facility that
derives its name and course from the
Upper Round Road.
Originally
constructed during the late 1600's, the road was a vital link between
the estates, sugar cane fields and communities that once surrounded
Nevis Peak. Today, the trail circumnavigates 2/3rds of the island
from Golden Rock in the east to the Nisbet Plantation Beach Inn
on the northern tip. Visitors can follow the trail through the three
sections, the Windward. Leeward and Northern each providing a unique
glimpse into the differing experiences, sights and environments.
With the aid of a $9,712 grant from RARE, Centre for Tropical
Conservation, the NFSC has worked diligently to provide residents
and visitors with sustainable trail system that allows them to experience
the exceptional cultural, historical and environmental diversity
that characterizes Nevis. URRT plans for the millennium include
teacher orientation, school, programs, and fund-raiser/sporting

According
to the documentary and archaeological evidence, 17th century
Nevis was home to one of the earliest and most vibrant Jewish
communities in the Caribbean.
From 1993 until 1997 the NFSC,(along with the Boston
University, Commonwealth Jewish Council and private donors)
sponsored archaeologist Michelle Terrell's investigations at
the site of the purported synagogue. Over 30 volunteers and
professional archaeologists excavated over 11,265 artifacts.
While the site did not yield the remains of the synagogue or
further evidence of the Jewish community, it is hoped that renewed
investigations within the coming year will reveal its location.
Further plans include a historic site marker and interpretative
centre at the cemetery.
