THE FINANCE COMMITTEE (a standing committee)
Purpose:To manage the Society’s financial affairs, including budgets, audits and investments.
THE FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE
Purpose: To raise funds for the annual operations and long term financial stability of the Society
Subcommittees: Silent Auction, Fashion Show, House & Garden Tour
Current challenges: To build the endowment, while continuing to support ongoing activities
Opportunities: Attracting support from new, affluent residents of Nevis; encouraging older residents to include the Society in estate planning; operating income producing tours of historic sites
MEMBERSHIP SERVICES (a standing committee)
Purpose: Responsible for all services that are related to membership, including publications, educational programs, public relations and volunteers
Current challenges: to grow and re-vitalize the membership through educational, fun activities
Opportunities: re-establishing educational walks and periodic lectures
MUSEUMS AND ARCHIVES (a standing committee)
Purpose: Responsible for the oversight of buildings and grounds, and the collections
Subcommittees: Archives Advisory Board, Retail Advisory Board
Current challenges: short-term freshening of the museum displays; planning for the long term relocation, expansion and upgrading of the museums, upgrading the shops.
Opportunities: possible expansion into the second floor of Hamilton House
CONSERVATION & BIO DIVERSITY
Purpose: Responsible for the activities of the Society that pertain to the natural environment, including coastal clean ups, beach monitoring, the incinerator project.
Subcommittees: The Environmental Action Committee
Current challenges: identifying and protecting important wetlands and slopes; fostering proper management of rock quarries to reduce marine degradation from runoff.
ARCHAEOLOGY and HISTORIC PRESERVATION
Purpose: Responsible for the activities of the Society that pertain to the island’s built heritage, including Charlestown, vernacular housing, and the sugar estates.
Current challenges: promoting historic district protection for Charlestown and incentives for rehabilitating older buildings.
FIELD STUDIES COORDINATION
Purpose: To work with visiting scholars and other committees on logistics for field projects
Current challenges: creation of guidelines for visiting scholars.
NATIONAL TRUST (a special committee)
Purpose: To promote the establishment of a Nevis National Trust
Current challenges: Lobbying for action on the pending draft legislation
